Bangkok, Thailand

PRE: THE ESSENCE OF BANGKOK

Explore Bangkok like a local as you discover its temples, markets and the secrets of traditional Thai canal life. Tour several sites by tuk-tuk, including Chinatown, a fragrant flower market and striking Wat Po, the oldest temple in Bangkok and also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. During a canal cruise, discover floating shops, teakwood houses and hidden temples as you glide among Thonburi’s complex network of canals. Also, visit The Jim Thompson House, a private Thai-style residence that now serves as a museum.

Day 1

After arriving at the Bangkok International Airport and proceeding through luggage claim and Customs, you will be met in the Arrivals Hall and transferred to your hotel in the Bangkok city center. Check in is at 3:00pm. Although every effort will be made to have rooms available before this time, this cannot be guaranteed. Should you be arriving very early in the morning you may wish to book an extra night, so your room is ready upon your arrival.

The remainder of the day is at your leisure and meals are on your own.

Day 2

Following breakfast at the hotel you will begin your exploration of Bangkok by coach, traveling through vibrant China Town, Bangkok's commercial center for more than 200 years while en route to Pak-Klong-Talad. Here, you'll be treated to a short stroll through the amazing kaleidoscope of colorful blooms and perfumed scents of what is considered the city's primary flower market.

Next you will have the opportunity to experience travelling through the old city of Bangkok like a local - via Tuk Tuk - a 3-wheeled motorized taxi that truly puts you in the heart of the action and allows you to fully absorb the atmosphere of this fabulous city.

Your next stop is at Wat Po, or the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, the oldest temple in Bangkok. This popular temple is where you will find Thailand's largest reclining Buddha. Incredibly the grounds house over 1,000 Buddha images. The focal point of your tour is an opportunity to visit the immense gold-plated Buddha that extends to a length of 150 feet and rises to a height of 49 feet.

Continuing, you'll next venture to a high-quality shop where you can take time to browse for souvenirs. Thailand is famous for its beautiful Thai silk, jewelry and local handicrafts and the shop offers a diverse selection

of merchandise for your perusal.

Return to your hotel where you can freshen up and enjoy lunch on your own.

This afternoon embark on a tour of the city by canal. Board a local river boat for an enlightening cruise along the bustling Chao Phaya River and through the complex network of klongs (canals) in the Thonburi district. Along the way, you will enjoy picturesque scenes of traditional Thai canal life, including floating grocery stores, speeding water taxis, teakwood houses built on stilts and hidden temples.

Your first stop is at the Royal Barge Museum which houses the ornately decorated longboats that were once used for royal functions. Here, you can see the lavish Suphanahonge, a gold encrusted swan-shaped barge used solely

by the king. In addition to Suphanahong, there are many other fascinating and unique barges on display, each revealing a remarkable degree of exquisite craftsmanship.

Leaving the Museum, you'll next travel to Wat Arun or the Temple of Dawn. The Temple is one of the most well-known and popular tourist attractions in Bangkok and you'll have some time to stroll around the lovely temple

grounds and view the various decorative murals.

Arrive back at the hotel where the remainder of your day is at leisure and dinner is on your own.

Day 3

Following breakfast, visit the former residence of Princess Chumbot of Nakhon Sawan – Wang Suan Pakkard. The Palace is a collection of five traditional Thai-style houses including the "Lacquer Pavilion" which dates from the Ayutthaya period. The buildings are now home to a priceless Asian antique collection and exquisite wood carvings.

Continue with a visit to the private Thai-style house of Jim Thompson, the "father" of the famous Thai silk industry. The house now survives as a museum after the mysterious disappearance of the legendary Mr. Thompson in Malaysia. On display in the main house is his splendid small Asian art collection as well as his personal belongings.

Return to the hotel where the remainder of the day is at leisure with lunch and dinner on your own.

Day 4

Following breakfast and check out at the hotel, you will be transferred to the ship to begin the cruise.

What to Bring:

On this tour the key words are comfortable and casual. Remember we are visiting a foreign country and local dress codes should be observed.

*Please avoid uncovered shoulders, shorts or revealing clothing.

*Full length trousers or pants and/or skirts covering the knees are required to be worn when visiting Angkor Wat

Although dinners are not formal, you may want to bring something a bit dressier for that time of day.

Bring a hat or a head covering for sun protection and don’t forget your sunscreen, sunglasses and bug spray (you should have mosquito repellent for sunrise and sunset hours). It’s also a good idea to bring along a small packet of tissues or wet wipes. It is also suggested that guests wear flat comfortable walking shoes (not sandals or open toed shoes / flip flops). Guest are requested to take-off their footwear and hats when visiting religious sites.

Currency:

Guests are encouraged to bring US Dollars with them as they are most commonly accepted in Cambodia. The local currency is the Cambodian Riel. You should take smaller denominations of US Dollars with you, as they will keep you from ending up with a lot of local change that you will not be able to re-exchange back home.

Electricity:

Rooms are equipped with 220-volt, two-pin US style electrical outlets. We recommend travelling with your own adaptor kits should you have electronic devices.

Water: Avoid tap water and drinks with ice in them. Drink mineral water and drinks in sealed containers. Water at the hotels in both Bangkok and Siem Reap is potable.

Luggage:

For a program of this length and nature, we suggest no more than one suitcase per person.

Luggage Weight Restrictions: 20kg (44lbs) - Light luggage would be most suited for this 3-night trip. Please note that the airlines allow a maximum of 1 checked suitcase (20 kg or 44lbs) and one small carry on. Any additional pieces will be in excess and fees will be paid to the airline at the guests’ expense. If you wish you can store excess luggage in Bangkok at the hotel. It will be sent to the ship on Day 4. Please ensure that all excess bags are tagged properly and visibly with your full name and suite number on the ship. Pack accordingly as excess bags will be collected before you leave Bangkok and you will be re-united with your luggage on day 4 on board the ship. Note that Oceania Cruises, the hotel, nor our local ground operator are liable for any lost or missing items. We do not recommend leaving valuables behind or in checked luggage. You should keep any valuables with you in your carry-on handbag.

Carriage of Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines on internal flights per airline regulations (subject to change as each airline has their own regulations)

1. Guests must obtain a Doctor’s Certificate mentioning their medical condition and the need to carry this equipment with them on their flights.

2. The certificate should have attached a picture of the equipment with its description/specifications especially with regards to the type of batteries used (lithium/dry or any other type)

3. These documents need to be sent to the Land Program Team via Reservations at OCI at least one month prior to travel so that our local operator can begin the notification process with the airline(s).

4. Failure to comply with the above regulations may result in a denial of this equipment at the airport for which Oceania Cruises nor our local ground operator be responsible for.

Documentation:

Guests must carry a valid passport with at least 6 months validity and have spare pages for the Cambodian Visa. Visas will be issued on arrival in Siem Reap.

VERY IMPORTANT – The name on your cruise booking, passport and any visas if required, must all be exactly the same for flight ticket purchase for this program otherwise guests may be denied travel by flight. Please ensure that all documents are identical in spelling to the names provided for your cruise reservation including first, middle and last name. OVERLAND - THE RIVER KWAI

Discover Thailand’s timeless culture, from the bustling markets and communities of Bangkok to a seven-tiered waterfall in Kanchanaburi and historical temples of Ayutthaya, the nation’s former capital. Along the way, learn about the nation’s history and spirituality, taste local cuisine and experience a traditional Thai massage.

NOTE: this program is limited to 16 guests.

Special Note: Any guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read further below for airline stipulations with regards to bringing this equipment on tour.

DAY 1

Disembark the ship in Bangkok and meet your guide.

Your first stop is at a palm sugar plantation, where you will meet a villager who still makes palm sugar using traditional techniques passed down from generation to generation. There are many coconut palm tree plantations in Thailand, and this organic palm sugar is created from the nectar of the coconut.

Next you will board a small boat for a ride through narrow village canals to the famous floating market of Damnoen Saduak, where vendors sell their wares from traditional wooden boats. One of Thailand's most popular attractions, it's known by some as the Venice of the East, where vendors have been selling their goods along the water’s edge since the mid-1800s.

Lunch is served at a local restaurant.

Filled with rolling mountains, flowing rivers and cascading waterfalls, Kanchanaburi is an area of scenic natural beauty with several opportunities for active adventures such as forest treks and kayaking. Best known for its role in the construction of the Death Railway and the infamous bridge over the River Kwai, the town has now become a living memorial to the over 16,000 allied soldiers who lost their lives here under brutal conditions during World War II.

Check in to your hotel and enjoy a relaxing evening massage - your choice of a traditional Thai massage or foot massage.

Cross River Kwai Hotel is located beside the most beautiful stretch of the Kwai Noi River, with a spectacular backdrop of mountain ranges and blue sky over the idyllic countryside. Guests are invited to take advantage of the resort’s prime riverside location with many water activities on offer, including swimming, kayaking, and paddle boating.

Enjoy a welcome dinner on the riverbank at the hotel.

DAY 2

In the early morning set off to visit Erawan National Park, considered the most beautiful in the whole of Thailand with azure waters leading into verdant, bamboo-fringed pools. Explore the famous seven-level waterfall, or simply swim and relax.

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before travelling back towards Kanchanaburi and Hellfire Pass Memorial, where you will learn about a tragic episode in the area's history. The memorial was built to honour Asian workers and Allied prisoners of war who died whilst constructing the Thai-Burma railway. Cut through rock 18 meters deep, Hellfire Pass takes its name from the fires used to light the treacherous work at night. Also visit Nam Tok Train Station - constructed by the Allied prisoners of war - which can be found at the end of the line.

Take a train ride along the historic tracks alongside the Kwai Noi River. As you pass through Tham Krasae station close to the mountainside, you'll see one of the most beautiful panoramic scenes of the Kwai Noi River.

Return to your resort where the rest of the evening is at your leisure.

Enjoy dinner at the hotel

DAY 3

Savor your final morning with breakfast at your hotel. After check-out, journey approximately 3.5 hours to Ayutthaya. This ancient city, once the second capital of Siam after Sukhothai and one of the most powerful in Asia, had more than one million residents by AD 1700 and enjoyed great riches due to trading with lavish palaces and temples.

Here, explore Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon temple, which is home to a fortune teller. Continue to Wat Phanan Cheoeng, Ayutthaya's version of the Taj Mahal and one of its oldest temples, which is home to a 19-meter-high Buddha. Behind the temple is a small 18th-century shrine built to honour a Chinese Princess, who drowned herself because of the king's infidelity.

After lunch, visit the 13th-century ruins of Wat Phra Mahathat with its rows of Burmese beheaded Buddhas and much-photographed Buddha head surrounded by Banyan tree roots.

Proceed to your hotel where you will have a farewell dinner with a selection of classic Thai dishes.

Nestled on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, Sala Ayutthaya is an intimate oasis that showcases the rich history and cultural heritage of Thailand. Designed to blend in with nearby historical sites, the hotel embraces the architectural style of the old Ayutthaya Kingdom with a striking red brick wall that contrasts beautifully with the minimalist whitewashed buildings. Each guestroom comes with river views and the riverfront terrace restaurant is the ideal setting for an al fresco meal.

DAY 4

After breakfast, enjoy some time at leisure

Enjoy lunch at the hotel before checking out and transferring to the Bangkok Airport for a flight to Ho Chi Minh City.

You are met on arrival in Ho Chi Minh City and transferred to the pier where you will re-board the ship.

NOTE: A valid multiple entry Vietnamese Visa is required to be purchased in advance of this trip for entry at the Ho Chi Minh Airport as well as for the remainder of the Vietnam ports on the cruise itinerary. Please consult with your local embassy for purchase of the correct documents.

What to Bring:

On this tour the key words are comfortable and casual. Remember we are visiting a foreign country and local dress codes should be observed. Please avoid uncovered shoulders, shorts or revealing clothing. Trousers or pants covering the knees are required to be worn when visiting Angkor Wat and Bayon Temple. Although dinners are not formal, you may want to bring something a bit dressier for that time of day.

Bring a hat or a head covering for sun protection and don’t forget your suntan lotion, sunglasses and bug spray (you should have mosquito repellent for sunrise and sunset hours).

Any additional pieces will be paid to the airline at the guests’ expense. If you wish, excess luggage will be stored at the hotel in Bangkok by our local ground operator. Please ensure that any excess bags to be stored are tagged properly and visibly with your full name and suite number on the ship. You will be re-united with it on Day 3 once you are back in Bangkok. Please pack accordingly as bags will be separated when you disembark the ship.

4. Failure to comply with the above regulations may result in a denial of this equipment at the airport for which Oceania Cruises nor our local ground operator be responsible for.

Documentation:

POST: ANGKOR WAT EXPERIENCE FROM BANGKOK

Just outside Cambodia’s Siem Reap, a unique and thrilling adventure awaits you in the jungles of Angkor, where you can uncover the rich history and grand architecture of the Khmer Empire. Obscured by dense vegetation for centuries, the glorious temples of Angkor comprise one of the world’s largest religious monuments. The most famous is the enormous Angkor Wat, whose soaring walls are covered with intricate carvings. You will also pass through the imposing gates of Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Khmer Empire, to explore the renowned Bayon Temple.

Please note: There is extensive walking over uneven ground at the temple sites - at times up to 2 km, with steps at Bayon and Angkor Wat. This tour is not suitable for guests with walking difficulty or if confined to a wheelchair. It can also be very hot and humid there.

Flight schedules are subject to change thus the tour sequence may vary.

Cambodian visa fee is included in the tour and will be applied upon arrival at Siem Reap Airport

Special Note: Any guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read further below for airline stipulations with regards to bringing this equipment on tour.

DAY 1

After disembarking the ship, identify your luggage and then board your transfer coach from the pier to the Bangkok airport. Upon arrival at the Bangkok airport, proceed through check-in for your flight to Siem Reap.

NOTE: Your passport will be kept by our program operations team in order to process the visa on arrival and for exit procedures on departure day. Your passport will be safely returned to you on Day 3.

On arrival in Siem Reap you will be met and assisted with obtaining your Cambodian Entry Visa. Once this has been issued, board an air-conditioned coach for the transfer to your hotel for check-in and enjoy some leisurely time for lunch on your own or familiarize yourself with the hotel areas and facilities.

During the evening time, enjoy an energetic performance of theater, dance, art, and acrobatics at Phare, The Cambodian Circus. The troupe, whose name translates to “Brightness of Art”, supports, and promotes Khmer art and culture, providing much needed opportunities for local youths and developing careers in the arts. Take your VIP seat in the circus tent and witness stunning and heart-warming scenes that depict daily life in Cambodia - a mesmerizing one-hour show with exhilarating set-piece performances that require hours of dedicated practice. Dinner will be served at a local restaurant.

Overnight at the Borei Angkor Resort or similar hotel

DAY 2

After breakfast you will venture out to visit Angkor Thom including the renowned Bayon Temple, built in the 12th Century, the Terrace of the Leper King and the Elephant Terrace, a sandstone wall covered with carved hunting scenes and three-headed elephants.

Continue to visit the un-restored temple of Ta Prohm which is famous for its forest atmosphere and enormous fig trees. This temple looks just as it did when the first European explorer arrived. It is also the location of many of the scenes filmed for Angelina Jolie’s huge blockbuster movie, Tomb Raider.

Lunch will be served at a local restaurant and after lunch visit Artisans d’Angkor, a school for underprivileged youth where they are taught the ancient crafts of wood and stone carving, creating lacquer ware, painting and silk weaving. Stroll through the school to watch young Cambodian artisans learning a trade and continuing age-old traditions. Many of the students’ crafts are offered for sale in the school store, ranging from beautiful silks and stunning lacquer ware to elegant stone and wood carvings. All the proceeds go towards the running of the school.

Continue to look around The Old Market (Phsar Chas) - the most popular with tourists and visitors, offering the greatest selection of souvenirs, textiles, handicrafts, statues, and curios of any of the traditional markets.

Back at the hotel, enjoy dinner and an Apsara cultural show

Overnight at the Borei Angkor Resort or similar hotel

DAY 3

After breakfast, set out to explore the archaeological treasures of Angkor Wat. You will have approximately 2 hours to explore the site with your guide who will point out the best spots for taking photos of this massive temple complex. Walk amidst the moss-peppered cobbled pathways, gaze up at the intricately carved tower tops and perhaps climb the steep and narrow temple steps that lead to wide courtyards. Lose yourself in contemplation as you catch the rays of the sun dancing off the bas relief carvings at sunset, the chatter of monkeys reverberating off the temple walls.

Following your visit, you will return to your hotel to freshen up, have lunch (on own account) and check out before the transfer to the airport for the flight back to Bangkok.

Upon arrival into Bangkok you will be met and assisted onto your transfer from the airport to the hotel.

POST: THE ESSENCE OF BANGKOK

Explore Bangkok like a local as you discover its temples, markets and the secrets of traditional Thai canal life. Tour several sites by tuk-tuk, including Chinatown, a fragrant flower market and striking Wat Po, the oldest temple in Bangkok and also known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. During a canal cruise, discover floating shops, teakwood houses and hidden temples as you glide among Thonburi’s complex network of canals. Also, visit The Jim Thompson House, a private Thai-style residence that now serves as a museum.

Day 1

Disembark the ship and transfer to the heart of Bangkok and embark on a tour of the city by canal.

The Temple is one of the most well- known and popular tourist attractions in Bangkok and you'll have some time to stroll around the lovely temple

grounds and view the various decorative murals.

Finally drive to your hotel where you will check in. The remainder of your day is at leisure with lunch and dinner on your own.

Return to your hotel where the remainder of the day is at your leisure. Lunch and dinner are on your own.
