Wakayama, Japan

Wakayama, a historic seaport in Japan’s Kansai region, is best known for Wakayama Castle, a 16th-century landmark offering sweeping city views. Mount Koya is a UNESCO-listed Buddhist site with over 100 temples, including the revered Okunoin Temple. The region is also famous for ume (plums) and its signature umeboshi (pickled plums). About 50 minutes from the port, the Tomb of Kii connects Wakayama to Japan’s imperial history, reflecting its significance during the Edo period.
