On the west coast of Zealand opposite Copenhagen, Kalundborg is oft framed as the quieter cousin of The City of Spires. The medieval town offers a slower-paced look at Danish culture and is endowed with enchantments all its own. The Old Town dates to the 12th century and is graced with well-preserved 15th- to 16th-century houses, the cultural history Kalundborg Museum, the 13th-century Church of Our Lady and quaint cafés to take in the ambiance. Denmark’s largest winemaker, Dyrehøj Vineyard, also happens to be located on Kalundborg’s sunny peninsula, where you can enjoy tastings of their white, rosé and sparkling wines. Strike out in surrounding areas to follow in the footsteps of the Vikings – at the site of Lake Tissø, the Viking fortress in Trelleborg and the Viking ship museum in Roskilde.
