Itineraries also feature our first calls on a series of new boutique ports, ranging from the hot springs of Akita, Japan, to the atmospheric Old Town of Bar, Montenegro. Relax on beaches overlooking the Bay of Gibraltar in Algeciras, Spain, or discover the hidden gems of Cam Ranh in Vietnam and Currimao in the Philippines. From Europe to the Caribbean to Asia and beyond, these new journeys showcase a remarkable array of culture, cuisine, history and natural wonders.

Akita, Japan
The capital of the eponymous northern prefecture, Akita is known for natural hot springs, excellent sake and vibrant seasonal festivals. Begin by exploring Senshu Park, where Kubota Castle was built in 1604. The moat, castle gate and watchtower remain in this public space that transforms from the blush of cherry blossoms in spring to the blaze of maples in autumn. A modern contrast designed by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando, the Akita Museum of Art features an extensive collection by esteemed Japanese-French painter Léonard Foujita, as well as works by Goya, Picasso and Rembrandt. Visit one of the traditional onsens in town to bathe in the hot springs, or head into the countryside to the ancient Nyuto Onsen in Towada-Hachimantai National Park and go boating on Lake Tazawa, the deepest lake in Japan.

Overlooking the Bay of Gibraltar, Algeciras is filled with lush city parks and the remnants of ancient fortresses. Start with a stroll through the central square of Plaza Alta, lined with palm trees, historic churches and lively cafés. The capital of Northern Ireland exhibits evidence of an illustrious past in its elegant city hall and botanic gardens, while murals and peace walls are reminders of a city once at the nexus of The Troubles, a conflict pitting the Irish against the British. Belfast may be best known for its role in the maiden voyage of the Titanic. Visit the dock where the ship had its final fit-out and the striking modern edifice housing Titanic Belfast, an interactive museum dedicated to the ship’s story. A short trip through the Irish countryside finds you at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Giant’s Causeway, a dramatic coastal landscape of thousands of symmetrical, interlocking basalt columns created by ancient volcanic activity and steeped in folklore.

However, equally compelling would be time spent exploring the UNESCO World Heritage site of Bryggen on the city’s 14th-century waterfront, learning about its fascinating history and shopping the boutiques for jewelry, art and clothing handcrafted by local artisans. Or delve into the massive collection of the seven Kode Museums, which include four neighboring art museums as well as the countryside homes of Norwegian composers Edvard Grieg, Harald Sæverud and Ole Bull.

Whether you’re wandering through ancient Greek ruins, shopping for local ceramics or hiking across lunar-like landscapes, there is almost nowhere to turn without a spectacular view in Sicily. Looming over Catania, Mount Etna provides a magnificent backdrop to a day spent exploring the grand Sicilian Baroque architecture erected after the city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1693. The volcanic terroir also produces Sicily’s distinctive wines, which you can sample on a tour of a local vineyard. For a taste of small-town Sicilian life, travel into the countryside and try the local eggplant caponata, prized sweet almonds and freshly squeezed blood orange juice while overlooking the sea in a delightful hillside town.

While St. Barts has certainly earned its reputation as the Saint-Tropez of the tropics with its designer boutiques and upscale cuisine, there’s much more to the island than seeing and being seen. You’ll find a remarkable number of exquisite beaches, all of which are public, so if you don’t wish to hobnob, then set off in search of a secluded bit of sand all your own. The serpentine coastline of St. Barts means another sheltered cove of aquamarine waters is always right around the corner.

A lot has changed since the iconic evacuation photos were taken during the fall of Saigon in 1975 – including the city’s name. Nowhere is the evolution more evident than when you view modern Ho Chi Minh City from the 81st-floor observation deck of Vietnam’s tallest building. Descend to explore the city’s history in its elaborate French colonial architecture, including the grand arches of the 19th-century post office, and in the poignant War Remnants Museum and the Reunification Palace. More of the past comes to light in the Cu Chi Tunnels built during the war on the outskirts of the city, while present-day life unfolds in bustling bazaars like the famous Ben Thanh Market.

You likely can’t think of Panama City without conjuring images of the Panama Canal. However, nearly 400 years before the Panama Canal opened its locks, Panama City was already making its mark. From the vestiges of the original settlement to the modern skyscrapers, experience the history and culture of one of the Pacific Coast’s oldest continuously inhabited European settlements. After exploring the bustling local markets in search of fresh fish or artisan handcrafts, admire the restored Spanish colonial architecture in Casco Viejo. Or you can head to the Miraflores Locks and watch one of the modern world’s most heroic feats of engineering in action.

Puerto Princesa, Philippines
Located on the island of Palawan, Puerto Princesa is a laid-back destination and favorite vacation spot for many Filipinos. In the local museums, explore the unique culture of this southern island and the important role it played in fighting the Axis powers in World War II. Then stop to dine on culinary specialties ranging from sinigang sour soup to wagyu beef stew. Just outside the city is the region’s most famous attraction, an underground river that meanders through one of the world’s most impressive cave systems and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. A boat trip might also find you on your own stretch of white sand after island-hopping in the surrounding waters.

Just east of Italy’s legendary Amalfi Coast, Salerno is within proximity of a bevy of beautiful locales, including Amalfi, Positano, Naples and more. Head northwest to explore the eerie and moving ruins at Pompeii, the remarkably preserved Roman city that was buried in ash by Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Or follow the coastline west and then ascend into the hills to visit Villa Rufolo, an ancient estate with magnificent gardens overlooking the sea in picturesque Ravello. History is everywhere you look in Old San Juan, established nearly a century before the Mayflower arrived in Plymouth Harbor. Your eye will be drawn up to some of the finest Spanish colonial architecture in the Americas, but be sure to also look down to admire the distinctive blue bricks used to pave Old San Juan’s streets in the 18th century. Inside the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista, the oldest cathedral in the U.S., you’ll find a gorgeous central dome and stained glass, while the centuries-old Spanish fortresses standing sentry on the coast offer stunning views of the Atlantic. You might also relax on one of Puerto Rico’s famous beaches or venture inland to El Yunque for a rainforest hike in search of hidden waterfalls and the rare Puerto Rican parrot.

Though now Italian, Trieste was under Austrian rule until after World War I and is just minutes from Slovenia and an hour from Croatia, meaning you’ll find a wealth of cultural influences in this city’s culinary culture and architectural heritage. Head to the Canal Grande to try Trieste’s renowned espresso in one of its famous cafés before strolling along the grand neoclassical buildings framing the Piazza Unità d’Italia, one of Europe’s largest and most beautiful seafront squares. Offering a glimpse into the city’s medieval past, the Castle of San Giusto stands on a hilltop with panoramic views, while the splendid Miramare Castle built for Austrian Archduke Maximilian in the 19th century is perched on the waterfront of the Gulf of Trieste and surrounded by lush gardens.
