PRE: EXCLUSIVE UBUD: SERENE RETREATS

$3,499.00/person

Behold the natural beauty that defines the uplands of Bali and admire the artistic talents of the Balinese through architecture and demonstrations. The immersive experiences include watching sunrise from atop Mount Batur, picnicking on volcanic blank sand and easing into a geothermally heated hot spring. Seeing traditional rice terraces adds a cultural aspect, as will observing artisans making expressive batik fabrics and goldsmiths creating exquisite jewelry. You will also revel in the serenity of a Hindu temple and a waterfall that cascades ever so gracefully.

DAY 1

After flying into the Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, you will transfer to your hotel for a 3:00pm check-in. Although every effort will be made to have rooms available beforehand, this cannot be guaranteed. If your room is not ready when you arrive, you may temporarily store luggage at the reception desk.

The remainder of the day will be at your leisure to do as you please. You may simply settle in and enjoy the amenities of the hotel or see some of the local sites on your own. Meals will be on your own.

DAY 2

The day will begin with a drive in a 4x4 vehicle to a point on Mt Batur where the first light of the day can be seen rising between the three mountains of Abang, Batur and Agung. Be sure to wear warm clothing as the weather can reach 17° Celsius (62° Fahrenheit).

In time, you will descend to volcanic area of black sand for a picnic breakfast with hot coffee and tea.

You will have time for photos before continuing on to the hot spring. A changing room and towels will be provided, allowing you to relax in the heated pool.

Afterwards, you will enjoy lunch at a venue that offers sweeping views over the caldera.

After returning to the hotel, the remainder of the day will be at your leisure.

DAY 3

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will drive to see beautiful rice terraces at Tegallalang, passing through spectacular rice fields on the way.

Your next stop will be the Tegenungan waterfall, a beautiful setting where the water cascades into a clear pool.

Following lunch at a nearby restaurant, you will return to the hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day at your leisure.

DAY 4

After breakfast at the hotel and check out, you will drive to Batuan, a Balinese Hindu temple in the countryside. The temple is beautifully designed and full of Balinese ornaments. Be sure to notice temple roof, which is made from the fiber of chromatic black palm trees.

You will then travel to Celuk Village, which is known for its silversmiths and goldsmiths. The jewelry produced in the village is revered for its intricate designs and fine craftsmanship.

The thousands of the birds there are showcased in natural habitats, in spacious walk-in aviaries and roaming freely throughout the park. The park’s remarkable display of tropical plants and trees attracts a significant butterfly population.

Following lunch in the park, you will visit a workshop where batik clothing is produced. Batik is the technique of dying the fabrics to create designs that typically reflect nature, although geometric patterns are also popular. It is a fascinating process and this behind-the-scenes opportunity to see it firsthand will be eye-opening.

Afterwards, you will drive to Benoa harbor to embark on the cruise ship.

PRE: BREATHTAKING BALI

$1,599.00/person

Behold the awe-inspiring natural beauty of Bali and delve into the island’s traditional culture in inspiring urban and rural settings. In the first day alone, you will watch frighteningly costumed Barong dancers, see how batik is made, observe master silversmiths and goldsmiths, and walk through an extraordinary bird park. Another day is devoted to Bali’s unique agricultural and irrigation practices so essential to conserving its farmland. For the ultimate deep dive into the Balinese way of life, you will visit a culture park devoted to the Hindu god Vishnu.

DAY 2

Following breakfast at the hotel, the day will be spent discovering the fascinating and vibrant culture of Bali. You will first stop to watch a theatrical Balinese Barong dance performance that tells a story of the fight of good versus evil.

Continuing on, you will travel to a traditional Balinese house compound. The Balinese home is often viewed as a living organism. Much like a human being, it has a head (the ancestral shrine), arms (the sleeping quarters and living room) and legs and feet (the kitchen and rice granaries.) This up-close look into the compound will give you an authentic glimpse into Balinese life.

You will then travel by coach to Celuk Village, which is known for its silversmiths and goldsmiths. The jewelry produced in the village is revered for its intricate designs and fine craftsmanship.

At Bali Bird Park, you will find the largest collection of Indonesian birds in the world, as well as many species indigenous to Africa and South America. The thousands of the birds there are showcased in natural habitats, in spacious walk-in aviaries and roaming freely throughout the park. The park’s remarkable display of tropical plants and trees attracts a significant butterfly population.

Batik is the technique of dying the fabrics to create designs that typically reflect nature, although geometric patterns are also popular. It is a fascinating process and this behind-the-scenes opportunity to see it firsthand will be eye-opening.

Later, you will return to the hotel for the evening with dinner on your own.

DAY 3

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will settle in for a leisurely drive into the countryside to Jatiluwih, a farming area with beautiful rice terraces.

For most Balinese, agriculture is their livelihood. Villages are centered around or near rice fields and farmers typically join a subak, a cooperative water management system of canals and weirs that dates to the 9th century. Subaks are so unique and important to Bali that UNESCO lists them as a World Cultural Heritage. As you travel through these verdant farming communities, you will no doubt be in awe of the cascading terraces of rice fields.

After viewing the rice terraces, you will proceed to Bedugul, a mountain resort area whose elevation ensures mild cooler weather. There, you will tour the Ulun Danu temple or Pura Bratan, a major Shivaite water temple. These sorts of water temples serve the entire region in the outflow area, with many smaller water temples downstream that are specific to individual subaks. Nearby Lake Bratan is known as the Lake of Holy Mountain due to the fertility of the surrounding area.

Following the exploration of Ulun Danu temple, you will enjoy lunch at a restaurant and then return to the hotel. The remainder of the day will be at your leisure with dinner on your own.

DAY 4

After breakfast at the hotel and check out, you will drive to the southern part of Bali to visit Garuda Wisnu Kencana. This cultural park is a Balinese landmark whose main attraction is a gigantic copper statue of Garuda Wisnu, the Vishnu lord. Being one of the world’s largest statues, it looks absolutely stunning rising above the landscape.

In Hindu mythology, Lord Wisnu is seen as the protector of the universe, while his trusted companion – the mighty eagle-like Garuda – represents loyalty and selfless devotion. The Garuda is also the national emblem of Indonesia and represents freedom.

After lunch at Jendela Bali restaurant, which is located within the park, you will transfer to the port in Benoa and embark the cruise ship.

PRE: MAGNIFICENT BOROBUDUR AT AMANJIWO

$5,799.00/person

Explore two extraordinary temple complexes – both UNESCO World Heritage sites – and come away with a greater understanding of Javanese history and religion. Completed in the 9th century, Borobudur is the single largest Buddhist monument in the world, yet was forgotten for centuries as it was covered in volcanic ash, staying at the exclusive Amanjiwo Hotel.

It reveals much about early Javanese culture as does Prambanan, a 10th-century landmark that is Indonesia’s largest Hindu temple. Touring a rural village in a VW vehicle and visiting Yogyakarta Palace will further enhance your appreciation for Java’s past.

Note: Guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read further below for airline stipulations with regards to bringing this equipment on tour.

DAY 1

After flying into the Yogyakarta International Airport in Java, you will transfer to your hotel in Magelang.

Check in is 3:00pm.

DAY 2

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will drive to Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple in the world. The name Borobudur is believed to have been derived from Sanskrit words that mean “Buddhist monastery on the hill.”

Built in the 8th and 9th centuries during the reign of the Syailendra Dynasty, the temple was abandoned for centuries and lay hidden under layers of volcanic ash. English military engineers re-discovered the temple in the early 19th century and in the late 20th century more than a million blocks of its volcanic stone were restored.

Today, this UNESCO World Heritage site is considered one of the world’s greatest Buddhist monuments.

After exploring Borobudur, you will transfer to the restaurant at the hilltop venue Enam Langit by Plataran. Following lunch there, you will tour the nearby village of Candirejo in a VW vehicle. The village is known for its natural beauty and strong Javanese culture.

Later in the afternoon, you will return to the hotel, where the remainder of the day will be at your leisure with dinner on your own.

(Please note: High-heeled shoes or high-heeled sandals are not allowed at Borobudur. Visitors must wear provided sandals made of woven pandan leaves. Visitors wearing short skirts or shorts must wear a provided sarong to cover their knees and thighs.)

DAY 3

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will drive to Jogja to visit the Sultan Palace, also known as Yogyakarta Palace. Considered to be the cultural hub of Yogyakarta, the grand palace complex was constructed in 1755 between two rivers to protect it against flooding. The setting of this royal palace is quite atmospheric and evokes images of life centuries ago.

Lunch at the restaurant Abhayagiri follows, after which you will visit the 9th-century Hindu temple compound of Prambanan. This impressive collection of temples is dedicated to the Trimurti, a concept of Hinduism in which Brahma is the Creator, Vishnu is the Preserver and Shiva is the Destroyer. They are often referred to as the Great Trinity or Hindu Triad. Easily recognized by its towering and pointed architectural design, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Prambanan is Java’s largest Hindu temple complex.

Prambanan also features panels of relief describing the story of Ramayana and the Kalpataru tree that Hindus consider to be the tree of life, eternity and environment harmony.

After visiting Prambanan, you will return to the hotel, where the remainder of the day will be at your leisure with dinner on your own.

DAY 4
