Behold the awe-inspiring natural beauty of Bali and delve into the island’s traditional culture in inspiring urban and rural settings. In the first day alone, you will watch frighteningly costumed Barong dancers, see how batik is made, observe master silversmiths and goldsmiths, and walk through an extraordinary bird park. Another day is devoted to Bali’s unique agricultural and irrigation practices so essential to conserving its farmland. For the ultimate deep dive into the Balinese way of life, you will visit a culture park devoted to the Hindu god Vishnu.
DAY 1
After flying into the Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, you will transfer to your hotel for a 3:00pm check-in. Although every effort will be made to have rooms available beforehand, this cannot be guaranteed. If your room is not ready when you arrive, you may temporarily store luggage at the reception desk.
The remainder of the day will be at your leisure to do as you please. You may simply settle in and enjoy the amenities of the hotel or see some of the local sites on your own. Meals will be on your own.
DAY 2
Following breakfast at the hotel, the day will be spent discovering the fascinating and vibrant culture of Bali. You will first stop to watch a theatrical Balinese Barong dance performance that tells a story of the fight of good versus evil.
Continuing on, you will travel to a traditional Balinese house compound. The Balinese home is often viewed as a living organism. Much like a human being, it has a head (the ancestral shrine), arms (the sleeping quarters and living room) and legs and feet (the kitchen and rice granaries.) This up-close look into the compound will give you an authentic glimpse into Balinese life.
You will then travel by coach to Celuk Village, which is known for its silversmiths and goldsmiths. The jewelry produced in the village is revered for its intricate designs and fine craftsmanship.
At Bali Bird Park, you will find the largest collection of Indonesian birds in the world, as well as many species indigenous to Africa and South America. The thousands of the birds there are showcased in natural habitats, in spacious walk-in aviaries and roaming freely throughout the park. The park’s remarkable display of tropical plants and trees attracts a significant butterfly population.
Following lunch in the park, you will visit a workshop where batik clothing is produced. Batik is the technique of dying the fabrics to create designs that typically reflect nature, although geometric patterns are also popular. It is a fascinating process and this behind-the-scenes opportunity to see it firsthand will be eye-opening.
Later, you will return to the hotel for the evening with dinner on your own.
DAY 3
Following breakfast at the hotel, you will settle in for a leisurely drive into the countryside to Jatiluwih, a farming area with beautiful rice terraces.
For most Balinese, agriculture is their livelihood. Villages are centered around or near rice fields and farmers typically join a subak, a cooperative water management system of canals and weirs that dates to the 9th century. Subaks are so unique and important to Bali that UNESCO lists them as a World Cultural Heritage. As you travel through these verdant farming communities, you will no doubt be in awe of the cascading terraces of rice fields.
After viewing the rice terraces, you will proceed to Bedugul, a mountain resort area whose elevation ensures mild cooler weather. There, you will tour the Ulun Danu temple or Pura Bratan, a major Shivaite water temple. These sorts of water temples serve the entire region in the outflow area, with many smaller water temples downstream that are specific to individual subaks. Nearby Lake Bratan is known as the Lake of Holy Mountain due to the fertility of the surrounding area.
Following the exploration of Ulun Danu temple, you will enjoy lunch at a restaurant and then return to the hotel. The remainder of the day will be at your leisure with dinner on your own.
DAY 4
After breakfast at the hotel and check out, you will drive to the southern part of Bali to visit Garuda Wisnu Kencana. This cultural park is a Balinese landmark whose main attraction is a gigantic copper statue of Garuda Wisnu, the Vishnu lord. Being one of the world’s largest statues, it looks absolutely stunning rising above the landscape.
In Hindu mythology, Lord Wisnu is seen as the protector of the universe, while his trusted companion – the mighty eagle-like Garuda – represents loyalty and selfless devotion. The Garuda is also the national emblem of Indonesia and represents freedom.
After lunch at Jendela Bali restaurant, which is located within the park, you will transfer to the port in Benoa and embark the cruise ship.
